THE REAL DEAL 2 August 2008
The Rotary Leadership Institute is coming to District 7330!
What is the Rotary Leadership Institute?
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) was founded to
assist in improving the Rotary knowledge and leadership
skills of the future leaders of our Rotary clubs by
providing interactive and discussion-based educational
opportunities.
Founded by Rotarians in 1992, RLI is implemented in 31
Rotary districts in the northeastern USA. Although not a
part of Rotary International, they do endorse RLI’s
mission.
Why do we need RLI in our District?
Rotary needs a constant influx of leadership as club
officers change annually. It is often difficult for members
to learn enough about Rotary at the club level and
develop the leadership skills, which are
often quite different than those used in
business, needed to effectively lead a
volunteer organization.
The success and failure of clubs can be
dependent on the educational opportunities
made available to them. This is where RLI is
an important part.
Clubs in other districts that have participated in RLI
report increased membership, greater participation in
community service projects, and a higher level of clubwide
enthusiasm. Those of us that have participated in
the courses can attest to how well they are conducted!
What are the courses?
RLI offers a leadership course in three full day parts
(Parts I II, III). For example, the Part I Course Day
includes:
· Leadership/Characteristics
· Rotary beyond the Club
· Membership Retention
· Introduction to the Rotary Foundation
· Leadership/Team Building
· Service Projects
What are the learning methods?
RLI believes in incorporating as much discussion and
participation as possible. The participants bring their
wealth of experience to the table in a collaborative and
fun environment. Course methods also include roleplaying,
problem solving workshops and creating
projects with everyone participating. The methods are
designed to educate in an enjoyable format!
Who facilitates the courses?
Rotarians. Not just any Rotarians, but those carefully
selected by RLI for their knowledge and facilitation
abilities. All faculty members attend training conducted
by the Rotary Leadership Institute.
What’s in it for attendees?
Besides the fast track of Rotary knowledge, RLI will
enhance ones leadership skills in their Rotary, personal
and professional lives. The leadership and personal
growth makes ones Rotary leadership opportunity easier
and more rewarding for the participant and the rest of
the club!
When, where, how much, how many …
Courses are held in Fall & Spring semesters at
locations all over the northeast. District 7330 has
scheduled a Fall Course on September 27th at
Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC).
The cost to attend varies by location but the Course Day
we have scheduled costs $65 per person. To introduce
RLI to District 7330 clubs, the District will pay for first
person from each club to attend the September 27th
Course Day at WCCC.
Additional members from each club are welcome and
encouraged to attend but the member’s club must pay
for all members after the first. Think about it: Two
members from your club can attend for less than $33
each!
As club president, what are you to do?
As the leader of your club, you are in the best position to
nominate the Rotarians you feel have the best potential
for club leadership, not necessarily as club presidents.
They should ideally be within 3-4 years from a possible
club presidency or other club leadership position. It may
be one the best Rotary educational opportunities they
will ever experience!
Once you have made your selections, please forward
the nominees’ name, address, phone number and email
address to Jeff Malloy, District RLI Chair, preferably via
email (Jeff@EliteTechnology.us) or fax (724-838-8681)
by August 15th. Any questions call Jeff (724-289-1041)
or send him an email.
