District Events on the Horizon
With the Strike Out Hunger game
for 2008 in the books, three major
District events remain in the 2008-
2009 Rotary year.
The Foundation
Celebration
Scheduled during Rotary
Foundation Month in November,
this event is both a celebration of
the good works of the Foundation
and a significant fundraising event
for future endeavors. Like the
Strike Out Hunger game, it is an
excellent opportunity to renew
friendships with Rotarians
throughout the District and to make
new ones as well.
Those attending will learn more
about how the Foundation
operates and what is in store for
the future.
The District Assembly
The District Assembly Normally
scheduled for a Saturday morning
in April and held at the
Westmoreland County Community
College in Youngwood, the
Assembly offers education and
training in a variety of Rotary
subjects. While some topics are
usually on the agenda, the content
varies from year to year, so the
program is always fresh. Any
Rotarian who wishes to learn more
about the organization is welcome
to attend. A large delegation from
the Club normally attends and
carpools are available.
The District Conference
In many ways, the Conference is
the culmination of the Rotary year.
It is a celebration, a festival, an
educational event and a weekend
vacation. Individual and club
awards are presented,
entertainment is offered,
socializing occurs all day and all
evening, parties take place every
night and sumptuous food is
served.
The Conference will be held in
Johnstown in May. Many members
may be interested in riding
Johnstown’s incline or visiting the
Flood Museum.
Why You Should Attend
Participation in these District
events is not mandatory, but all
serious Rotarians should endeavor
to attend.
Attending will enhance your Rotary
experience. As we have noted
before, the more you invest in
Rotary, the more you will get out of
it. Your Rotary world will expand
beyond the limits of the Club’s
service area, not merely to the
seven counties of the District, but
to the world.
Speakers at these events include
Trustees of the Foundation,
Directors of RI, individuals who
have manned the ramparts in the
war against polio and others with
unique experiences and
perspectives.
More than one Rotarian has been
transformed through participation
in these events. You could be the
next.
