RYLA
Abbey Doran
Do you know an outstanding high school student who will be a junior or senior in the fall
of 2008 who might make an outstanding Rotarian some day? If so, you may want to
consider nominating that student for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award.
Rotary International District 7330 will host the 2008 Rotary Youth
Leadership Award Conference June 29 through July 3 at the
University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
Approximately 70 Rotary Youth Leadership Award recipients will attend the conference.
To receive the RYLA, students must be a junior or senior in high school and must be
recommended by a school administrator, teacher or counselor. Recommendations are
based on the students’ qualities of leadership, character and ethics that are consistent
with the ideals of Rotary International and the 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.
After receiving a recommendation, the student is notified and sent an application, which
is reviewed by his or her local Rotary Club. Award winners are then invited to attend the
conference.
“RYLA identifies tomorrow’s business and
community leaders and helps point those
students in that direction,” said Marlin “Bing”
Stephens, conference coordinator. “RYLA
recipients are tomorrow's Rotarians.”
Frank Marsh, a Marine Corps Intelligence
Officer who served during Desert Storm and rescue operations in Mogadishu, Somalia,
will give a presentation on Communication Analysis. Marsh now serves as a trainer for
the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, Pa., where he teaches Effective
Briefing Techniques, Stress Wellness, Anger Teamwork and Effective Communication,
Intelligence Analysis and Time Management classes.
Other highlights of this year’s conference will be the Outdoor Odyssey Leadership
Reaction Course, designed to engage problem-solving, decision-making and
communications skills within each team; a scuba diving course; an ice cream social;
and the annual awards banquet, among many other exciting programs and social
events.
